Fusomail vs Gmail’s built-in mail merge

Gmail has a mail merge of its own, but only on eligible paid Google Workspace plans, and your list has to be in Google Contacts or a spreadsheet. Fusomail works with a personal @gmail.com account too and reads a CSV or Excel file directly. If you already pay for an eligible plan and your emails are simple, Gmail’s own may be all you need.

Checked on 4 November 2026. Every fact about Gmail mail merge links to where it says so.

Gmail mail merge may suit you better if

  • You already pay for an eligible Google Workspace plan, so it costs nothing extra.
  • Your emails are simple: no field in the subject, no scheduling.
  • You would rather not connect another service to your account: it is built into Gmail.

Fusomail may suit you better if

  • You use a personal @gmail.com account, which is not on Google’s list of eligible plans.
  • Your list is a CSV or Excel file.
  • You want a name or company in the subject line.
  • You want to schedule a campaign (Starter and up).
  • You want addresses and wording checked before you send (Starter and up).
  • You want a suppression list you can see, export and add to.

How each one works

Gmail mail merge

Mail merge is an option on the “To” line of a new Gmail message: you turn it on, then add recipients from a Google Contacts label or a spreadsheet. SourceFor a spreadsheet, contact details must be on its first tab and can contain only text, and merge tags come from the column headers. Source

Fusomail

In Fusomail you connect your Gmail once with send-only access and upload a CSV or Excel file. Any column becomes a field for the subject and the body, with a fallback for empty values, and each campaign has its own page of results.
